Churchill War Rooms

While in London, we took the opportunity to tour the Churchill War Rooms, the underground headquarters where Churchill met with his Cabinet during WWII. These underground bunkers were used from 1938 until 1945 when Churchill and his staff walked out for the last time. The two most important rooms in the bunker were the Cabinet Room, of which Churchill declared that "This is the room from which I will direct the war," and the Map Room where intelligence was collected around the clock. The Map Room remains exactly as it was on its last day in use, and it was just fascinating to see such an important piece of history frozen in time.

(The lighting inside was difficult at best for taking photographs, so forgive the not so stellar pics.)

The Cabinet Room:

Churchill's wife even had her own room in the bunker because her husband spent so much time there.

The Map Room just as it was in 1945:

This was a great piece of WWII history that I'm so glad we were able to see firsthand. Definitely a must for any history buffs visiting London!
