Looking for Mister Darcy

If you're a Pride and Prejudice fan, then the name Pemberley is a familiar one to you. It was the home of wonderful leading man, Mister Darcy. In the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, you saw Lizzie visit the gorgeous, sprawling estate of Pemberley and probably found yourself daydreaming about living there with Mister Darcy. Well, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to go see it in person on our way to Scotland from London. (When I say we, I definitely just mean Laurel and me. The boys were not the least bit interested and opted to nap and read in the car while we toured the place.)

The real life name of this grand residence is Chatsworth House. It belongs to the Cavendish family and is currently the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The property has been handed down through sixteen generations of the family. Inside the house is a grand collection of art spanning a 4,000 year period. The property is massive, it is beautiful, and it is everything you would think Pemberley would be.

See that older gentleman in the blue sweater walking up the grand staircase? When I took that picture, I didn't know that we'd be spending the next couple of hours one on one with him. He came up behind Laurel and me early in the self-guided tour and pointed out a hidden figure in one of the ceiling murals. It turns out he was once a tour guide at Chatsworth House for years and years. He's retired now, but comes back regularly just because he loves the place so much. He stayed with us for the remainder of our time in the house, basically giving us our own private tour and pointing out all sorts of interesting facts along the way.

This sculpture, A Veiled Vestal Virgin, was incredibly beautiful! You may remember seeing it in the movie.

In the end, we didn't find Mister Darcy which is probably for the best because Laurel never would have left had we found him. Who needs Darcy anyway when you can spend an afternoon being charmed by a sweet old man with a lovely British accent?
