Giant's Causeway

We took a ferry from Scotland to Northern Ireland the day after our Harry Potter train ride.  We only had a couple of things to see in Northern Ireland, and one of them was Giant's Causeway. An ancient volcano created this area which is now home to about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns on the northern coast of Ireland. The causeway has been a World Heritage Site since 1986. While ancient volcanic activity provides the actual explanation for the site, it actually gets it name from the myth surrounding it.

According to legend, the basalt columns are remnants of a causeway built by an Irish giant named Fionn mac Cumhaill. He was challenged to a fight by a Scottish giant named Benandonner. Fionn built the causeway across the North Channel to provide a place to meet the Benandonner for the fight. The same basalt columns you see at Giant's Causeway also exist straight across the sea on the Scottish coast.

We had such a fun afternoon exploring this unique coastline, and it made for some gorgeous pictures!

There is nothing Austin loves more than climbing on things. Needless to say he was in his element here!
